The NDA swept to power in Maharashtra, securing a majority and winning 161 seats: 16 more seats than the 145 required to form a government.
NDA won 161 of the total 288 seats - a fall of 24 seats from the 2014 election. UPA came in second: it won 98 seats, an increase of 15 from the previous election. In a change from the previous election, Shiv Sena joined the NDA alliance, and Nationalist Congress Party joined the UPA alliance.
BJP's voteshare was 25.7%, a fall of 2.1% from the previous election. Others had 25.3% voteshare: an increase of 7.6% from the previous election. NCP had 16.7% voteshare: a fall of 0.5% from the previous election. Shiv Sena had 16.4% voteshare: a fall of 2.9% from the previous election. Congress had 15.9% voteshare: a fall of 2.1% from the previous election.
NDA performed much better in urban areas compared to rural areas. It secured 46.2% of the urban vote, compared to 40.4% of the rural vote. This translated to 74 out of 99 urban seats and 87 out of 189 rural seats.
There was significant regional variation in election results in Maharashtra. The NDA did particularly well in Mumbai, winning 30/36 of the seats. In comparison, the region of Western Maharashtra saw a relatively more competitive race. Here, the NDA won 25/70 of the seats.
